TREKKING THE ROOF OF AFRICA
Usually known as "The Roof of Africa,"
Ethiopia is a land of surprises, with a wealth of superb natural environments
in the whole of Africa for trekking. The breathtaking landscape with astonishing
view along with unique flora and fauna, make Ethiopia the paradise of trekkers.
Ethiopia
has an elevated central plateau varying in height between 2,000 and 3,000
meters. In the north and centre of the country there are some 25 mountains
whose peaks rise over 4,000 meters and some of the world's deepest canyons.
Considering all these facts, Ethiopia rightly christened “the roof of Africa.”
Trekking
in Ethiopia does not involve being super-fit. Horses, mules and donkeys are universal
means of transport. The terrain is usually steep for only short periods, when
walking rather than riding may be necessary.
Organizing
Trekking is one of our specialities
In Ethiopia trekking
can be arranged in different sites. It can be either in National
Parks with endemic wildlife; mammals, birds and flora. The Semien

are the most spectacular sites for keen trekkers. Trekking can also be arranged
with in the unique cultural areas of people like in Surma,
among Surma people, around Danakel Depression among Afar people. Trekking can
also be arranged along with the classical route of Lalibela. Other beautiful areas
include Mount Chilalo and the Arba Gugu area in Arsi, and the Chercher Mountains
in Harerge.

Semien Mountains National Park.
- The Bali Mountains National Park.
- Around
Surma people and in it’s surrounding
- Around Danakel Depression and
Afar Region.
- Around Maqdela.
- Around the Tigray Rock Churches and
Adwa Mountains.
- Around the Rock Churches out side the town of Lalibela.
Best
time for Trekking in Ethiopia and What to bring for any Trekking trips
The
best time for trekking is the drier season between October and May. During June,
July and August afternoon showers occur practically every day. This should not
keep you away. If you move through the mountains early in the day you are safe
most of the time because rains usually set in after midday. The rainy season has
its own attractions. The plant life is particularly lush and it is the time of
colourful flowering vegetation.
We recommend bringing the
following when you come for trekking to Ethiopia:
- Binoculars and
torches
- To avoid sunburn a hat and sun blocker are essential.
- Waterproofs,
sunscreens and water purifying tablets are all necessary.
- The trek requires
suitable clothing for extreme temperatures. Because the weather in the mountains
tends to be unpredictable a pullover, warm jacket and rainwear are also recommended.
Pack able layers are also recommended. Lightweight fabrics that dry quickly
after hand washing are essential. Clothing designed for maximum freedom
of movement must provide good wind, rain, and sun protection
- Strong shoes
are important
- Foodstuffs and the main luggage are carried by mules
where they will remain until the camp is reached. Your daily needs should be carried
in a separate pack.
- Do not forget the camera, video (batteries cannot
be charged on the trek), and plenty of films.
CYCLING
The
beautiful landscapes and the peaceful safe environment are favorable conditions
for cycling in the country. The Bali Mountains, Simien Mountains and Rift Valley
region can be sited as places of cycling.
